Safest Way for One Person to Load A Dirt Bike

Loading your dirt bike safely is one of the key element to assuring no additional wear and tear or even damage may be discovered the next time you take your dirt bike out on the trails for a ride.

Typically and most often, we see people hauling their dirt bikes in a lifted truck.  Remember, the higher the truck bed is, the more strength it takes to load your dirt bike on the truck bed.  Therefore, if you are going to haul your dirt bike on pick-up truck bed, this author suggests using a truck with a lower truck bed or better, using a trailer to make loading as easy and safe as possible.

If you have a regular or short bed truck and can’t shut the tailgate door due to the size of your dirt bike, try to shut the tail gate half way, if possible, and tie down tight.  Just make sure you have two tie downs tight on the handlebars.  Always best to add two additional tie downs to play it safe to the frame, rear wheel or even the pegs of the bike.

Loading a dirt bike especially when you are riding solo can sometimes be a challenge.

The best way to begin to load your dirt bike when not using a trailer is to purchase dirt bike ramps and place these ramps on the tailgate of your pick-up truck.  To reduce any damage to your dirt bike and to your back, push the dirt bike within the handlebars with a running start up the ramp and push it up.  With enough momentum, this method of loading your dirt bike safely especially when you are alone is easier than you may think.

There is another way to load your dirt bike with less strength needed when loading the bike solo.  I typically use my bike stand to stand on, which gives me more stability when loading the dirt bike.  This author suggests you practice this method safely before finding yourself alone on the bike trails. You can try to startup your dirt bike and place it in first gear.  Yes, you still need some strength and momentum however, if you perform this load method correctly, the dirt bike should be doing most of the work for you.  Just remember to slip the clutch ad give it some gas to get up the bike ramp.

There are other options to load a dirt bike to your truck or vehicle. Motorcycle carriers are an easy fix for the single rider to load.

How to Ride your Dirt Bike with Finesse and Protect your Skid Plate and Obie Link Guard

Some of our customers have mentioned that they have torn off their skid plates along with their Obie Link Guard when riding through rough, rocky terrain.  I have come up with a fix for keeping the Obie Link Guard coming apart from the skid plate, however, there isn’t much a guy can do if the entire dirt bike skid plate removes from the bike – or is there?

Here is what I did with my KTM Powerparts plastic skid plate and what I recommend to our customers.  I got rid of the Dzus fastener and used a bolt in the top mount of the skid plate, along with a 2-stroke pipe mount clip that is threaded for 6mm.  I then riveted the Obie Link Guard to the KTM skid plate.  Once the Obie Link Guard is installed on your dirt bike skid plate, you will never need to remove it.  I, personally, have had my KTM Powerparts skid plate and Obie Link Guard on my bike for 4+ years and have not had a problem with either the skid plate or the Obie Link Guard coming off my bike.

In addition, we have recently manufactured an aluminum Obie Hold Bracket for the KTM and Husqvarna dirt bikes.  Currently, the Obie Hold Bracket provides additional support and reinforcement for the following dirt bike skid plates:   TM Designworks (TMD), AXP and Moose Plastic.  The high quality aluminum bracket will act as additional strength and support for the skid plate and Obie Link Guard in the rear cross-frame area of the dirt bike.  Also, we are anticipating that the Obie Hold Bracket will work with additional dirt bike skid plates.

This problem of the entire skid plate removing from the bike got me thinking about how riders handle their dirt bikes, the terrain that is being ridden or raced and the type of rider we all would like to be.  I typically enduro and motocross race a couple times a year in Idaho and trail ride a fair number of times throughout the year.  I ride in the mountains on single track and I also ride in the desert on steep, rocky trails.  I participate in a few motocross races (50+ Master Class) as well as some desert SIDRA Racing and National Hare & Hound – mostly for fun at my age.

My Dad always told me that in order to be a good dirt bike rider you must become comfortable with the dirt bike and use it similar to a fine-tuned instrument.  According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of finesse is:  (n.) the skillful handling of a situation: adroit maneuvering (or clever or skillful in using the hands or mind); (v.) to do something in a subtle and delicate manner.  The definition highlights the importance of using a dirt bike in an appropriate manner in order to allow for calm and agile riding.

Learning to ride and keeping your balance on the bike is a must for dirt bike riding.  Good clutch control is also important.  Using the clutch and front brake levers with one or two fingers is another good riding skill.   You may also want to consider buying a Rekluse auto clutch.  The Rekluse helps with riding switch-back trails and also makes stalling the bike virtually impossible.  It also allows the rider to focus and concentrate more on the bike movements and control.  With your mind off the clutch, you’re free to concentrate on other things – such as the gorgeous mountains, negotiating that steep single track or navigating that strategic line.

It’s important that you get comfortable with using your front brake and not fearing the downhill.  Leaning your bike into the turns and overhanging the bike while counterbalancing may feel awkward, but is essential to learn and will quickly become natural to you.  As a finesse rider you will need to learn how to properly climb over rocks and logs.  Momentum is always your friend in these situations.  The technique is:  while standing, you rock the bike to unweight the front tire, blip the throttle to lift the front wheel up, close the throttle before the rear tire hits the log or the rock and coast over it.  Once the logs and rocks are mastered, you will then need to learn to wheelie and bunny-hop the bike.  Executing the bunny-hop is much like a lazy wheelie – you shut the throttle off and shift your weight to the rear of the bike.

Learning to ride with these techniques is not only learning the proper way to ride a dirt bike, but it will ultimately save your dirt bike skid plate and your Obie Link Guard.

10 Tips for Dirt Biking on Rocky Terrain

Handling a dirt bike on rocky terrain can be a challenge. Knowing how to control the power of a dirt bike can also be a challenge even for the experienced biker.  With my many years of riding and racing on these types of trails and terrain, I have come up with some basic strategies for maneuvering over rough terrain.  Here are 10 tips to manage rough terrain more easily.

  1. To negotiate rocky terrain, first scan the area and look for the smoothest possible path. Then when you enter the path, grip the dirt bike with your legs and stand up. This will keep the bike somewhat straight. Do not sit down on the bike’s seat.  Also, know that If you stare at a rock . . . you WILL hit that rock!
  2. If the rocks are really rough, your first reaction would be to look at your dirt bike’s front fender. Don’t do this!  Take your eyes off the front of your bike and look around for the smoothest line.  (Note:  the closer to the bike you look, as opposed to looking off at a distance on the trail, the slower you will go.)
  3. When riding at faster speeds through the terrain, be careful of plowing through sage brush or other small bushes.  Rocks live behind bushes and you’ll soon find yourself doing a big flying W.
  4. I typically run 15 psi of tire pressure at my shop the night before I ride.  I know this is not the same as checking the pressure on your tires when you’re riding (i.e. at certain altitudes and temperature), however, this definitely works for me.  I can count on one hand the number of flats I have had during my 40 years of riding and racing on Idaho terrain.
  5. Keep your body weight centered on the bike most of the time.  However, if there are bigger rock ledges you need to get over, lean back a little.  Accelerate a little and pull the handle bars back so you won’t find yourself going over the handlebars.
  6. Watch some trial riding videos or, better yet, ride a trials bike if you get a chance.  It will definitely help with your balance.
  7. Especially when riding rocky terrain, always remember to keep up your momentum. Instinct tells you to stop whenever the rocks become bigger.  If you do stop, you can stall and tip over.  Do not stop – do not panic!  You need momentum to get you through areas where the front end of the bike will drop. You do not want your front end to get stuck up in a hole.
  8. Sometimes, you find yourself stalling through a rough, rocky spot on the trail.  Remember that your clutch action has to be very smooth. Keep your fingers on the clutch at all times so you can easily pull the clutch when you need to.  If there is an obstacle, do not hesitate to give more power to the bike.  Be sure to keep your other finger on the front brake.  You would use that if you need to stop or slow down the bike in a hurry.   A Rekluse clutch (www.rekluse.com) is worth considering and can be very helpful in these types of gnarly rock sections.
  9. When riding in the mountain rocks, a soft compound rear tire or rear trials tire will help with your maneuvering.  However, the drawback to a running a trials tire is they don’t stop well and they do have poor traction in the mud and/or snow.
  10. The last and final tip I would recommend is to follow my Bench Racing Blog.  I intend to give you good, up-to-date content with regard to dirt bike riding and racing, and tips for protection and maintenance of your bike.  I also intend to give good advice and tips with respect to being a better, more efficient rider/racer and keeping your bike investment at a premium with linkage protection.

Is Dirt Bike Linkage Protection Necessary?

So, my riding buddies have been asking me this question for awhile.  I will tell you why I think it’s important to have dirt bike linkage protection and how to reduce the headache of linkage maintenance and replacing the suspension on your dirt bike.

First, why are more bikes being made with linkage suspension?  Well, that’s an interesting question and let’s talk about how linkage works.  Linkage moves the shock at an ever-increasing speed by compressing the shock at progressively greater amounts (for the same amount of rear wheel travel).  Since the shock moves faster and farther at the end of the stroke than it does at the beginning of the stroke, its damping increases.  Therefore, rising-rate linkages change the rate (read speed) at which the shock travels as the rear wheel moves.  I have found that when racing my 300XC, I do not have to think about how to approach an obstacle – like a rock, log or jump face – I just hit it!  Also, the “high/low” speed refers to shock-piston speed, not necessarily bike speed.  The faster the shock needs to respond, the better the linkage works because it assists the shock.

Second, how long does the typical linkage last?  Depending on how much you ride, your linkage suspension should last anywhere between 2 to 5 years, if you maintain and grease the linkage bearings on a “fairly” regular basis (2 or 3 times a year).  With poor maintenance and a lot of riding, you can plan on the linkage bearings wearing out within a year.  If you greased your linkage after each and every ride (yeah, right), conceivably your linkage would never wear out.  It is a known fact that most, if not all, dirt bike riders dread greasing and maintaining their linkage.  Out of sight – out of mind!

So, I know you’re wondering “Obie-Wan, what is involved in the maintenance and greasing of your linkage – I’ve never cleaned it before?”  Glad you should ask.  First, you’ll need to tear off the linkage suspension, the bushings and pins – check out this YouTube video on lubricating your linkage.  Did I mention this is a messy job?  You might think it’s intimidating, but don’t . . . it’s really not that bad.  After you’ve gotten the linkage off the bike and apart you will need to do an assessment of the parts.  linkage003Are they worn out and in need of replacement?  Can you tell if they’re worn out, or do you need your know-it-all buddy to come over and inspect the parts with you?  If the bearings and bushings in the linkage are worn out, you will need to buy new parts, which typically run about $150 – $200, depending on whether you want to buy OEM or aftermarket.  I prefer to use OEM – as Obie-Wan would say, “they will last longer and the Force will be with you.” (or something like that).  If the bearings and bushings are in decent shape, clean them up with a solvent and reassemble. When reassembling, be sure to hit the bearings and bushings with a good waterproof grease.  All this sounds pretty simple, right?  Unfortunately, it is messy and time-consuming (it can take anywhere between 1-3 hours depending on your dirt-bike-mechanic abilities).  But, done on a regular basis, you will find that the linkage will last a lot longer and you will get better, overall performance from the bike.

Finally, I know you’re wondering, “What does the Obie Link Guard do to prevent wear and tear on my linkage, how does it help me from having to do maintenance on my linkage on a regular basis, AND is linkage protection necessary?”  One of the more important aspects of the Obie Link Guard, beyond the fact that it protects your linkage from damage from rocks and logs (and helps the rider with gliding over these obstacles), is that it also protects the linkage from dirt and grime entry into the linkage seal bearings, which in turn allows for less maintenance and cost of repairs.  No more having to pressure wash the crap out of this area.

The Official Bench Racing Blog

The best place in the world to ride!

This marks the Obie Link Guard first “official” bench racing blog and we’re excited to kick it off!

First, I want to say a big “thank you” to all of our great customers this past year.  We’ve been amazed at how the Obie Link Guard has taken off and how it’s selling around the US and all around the world.  We have sold to 10 different countries in Europe, Japan, South Africa and Australia (we have to get more of those Aussies and Kiwis purchasing down under).  We are looking forward to increasing our branding and increasing sales this next year.

We also are working with some great people in Idaho that have created awesome dirt bike products – AirProFork and KoubaLink.  The AirPro was started in 2010 and the products began selling online in 2012.  The company offers a patented automatic fork bleeder for spring type forks and an equalizer for all of the new airforks currently found on Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki.  AirPro also has a fender adapter kit for KTMs.  AirPro also designs and manufactures custom logo mats made from rubber, vinyl and carpet.
